Re: Big Box Moratorium
I am writing to express my adamant opposition to big box development. Presently, Easton has five shopping centers, Easton Plaza, Giant/Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Talbottown & Tred Avon Square. The local economy, in my opinion, cannot support development of new shopping malls. This happened in the 1970's in Annapolis. Annapolis allowed the development of newer shopping centers. At one point, they had to sell one center to the State of Md because the owners of the shops could find businesses to lease the space. Today, Parole Plaza stands as an eye-sore.
Do we really want this for Easton? Can we really afford it? If we allow development of big boxes, how will we fill the empty holes left by businesses that move to newer, bigger places? How many more big box retailers do we want or need?
On Marlboro Road, we have (3) shopping centers w/ mini centers in between. What are the ramifications of expanding existing centers? We must be cognizant of environmental impacts and the real possibility of businesses moving from their existing locations and leaving an empty space.
Thank you for the opportunity to air my views.
Sincerely,
